New C1!

Our C1 course includes new programmes: Friends’ Talk – a group of English-speaking friends discussing the topic of each unit over coffee, On the News – real news clips from English-speaking countries and Extended Interviews which provides more in-depth talk with people from the documentaries. There are also real audios in the listening section, taken from the news, radio shows and interviews.

According to the CEFR a C1 student can:

  • Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognise implicit meaning.

  • Express himself/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.

  • Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.

  • Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

European Day of Languages – 26th September

Let’s celebrate the European Day of Languages this weekend with some language idioms:

In plain English – con lenguaje simple

I can´t understand the instructions, tell me how to do it in plain English.

Watch your language! – No uses palabrotas

Remember there are children here – please watch your language!

To speak the same language – entenderse con alguien (ideas, opiniones etc)

I get on well with Joe because we speak the same language.

You can learn more about language in B2.3 unit 5.

What is mediation?

Our new courses from B1.1 to C1.2 include linguistic mediation. But what is linguistic mediation?

Linguistic mediation tasks can be written or oral and the aim is to transmit information to another person by summarising, translating, paraphrasing or interpreting information. These activities aim to prepare students for the multicultural world in which we live and to improve communication skills in realistic situations. An example would be helping a foreign friend to decide what to order from the menú del día – explaining what you get for the price (bread, a drink, dessert) and what the dishes are, for example lentejas con chorizo or albóndigas. You can see an example response in B1.1, unit 4.

Study Tips

Get the most out of your studies!

With the 2020-21 academic year starting, we bring you some study tips to get the most out of your time and studies:

  • Find a comfortable, quiet place with good lighting to study in.

  • Make a realistic study plan – When can you study? How long for? How much can you study in that time?

  • Take breaks if you’re studying for a long time.

  • Get rid of any distractions such as your phone or put it on silent.

  • Make sure you have the material you need before starting – stationery, headphones etc.

  • If you have a friend who is also studying with That’s English! why not study together to practise the speaking activities?

We hope these tips are useful and help to make your study time more productive!

Remember, you can keep up to date with That’s English via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
